This page reflects a selection of politics-related articles
curated by a (new) U.S. third party voter.

While both main-party presidential candidates threaten
prospects of retaining any semblance of U.S. democracy,
links below emphasize the
Democratic threat,
which is all the more horrifying because
it’s hidden under the guise of
the dove.

Of special note:

  • Clinton Foundation Investigation Update: Key Details About Financial And Political Dealings (8/24/16) – This contains an overview of almost a dozen separate areas of troubling overlap between the Clinton Foundation and Clinton’s State Department.
  • Washington has Been Obsessed With Punishing Secrecy Violations — Until Hillary Clinton (7/5/16) – “This extreme, unforgiving, unreasonable, excessive posture toward classified information came to an instant halt in Washington today — just in time to save Hillary Clinton’s presidential aspirations. FBI Director James Comey, an Obama appointee who served in the Bush DOJ, held a press conference earlier this afternoon in which he condemned Clinton on the ground that she and her colleagues were ‘extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information,’ including top-secret material.”
  • Evaluating Information (6/9/16) – “If counterfeiters put pictures of their family members on their handiwork, nobody would be fooled. What constitutes a good fake is how well it resembles the real thing. This document will help you be able to distinguish real information from its three lookalikes, or counterfeits: propaganda, misinformation and disinformation.”

Posted 9/10/16:

  • Hillary Clinton’s National Security Advisers Are a “Who’s Who” of the Warfare State (9/8/16) – “The list of key advisers — which includes the general who executed the troop surge in Iraq and a former Bush homeland security chief turned terror profiteer — is a strong indicator that Clinton’s national security policy will not threaten the post-9/11 national-security status quo that includes active use of military power abroad and heightened security measures at home.”
  • What Aleppo Is and Is Not (9/8/16) – “Taken together, those error-strewn reports suggest that American journalists and pundits have become so completely focused on the horse-race aspect of electoral politics that they are paying almost no attention to the biggest foreign policy crisis that will face the next president.”
  • 5 Corporations Now Dominate Our Privatized Intelligence Industry (9/8/16) – “This unaccountable oligarchy of spies controls the information that guides our military and civilian leaders.”
  • That Time The Clintons Lied About Bill’s Mistress And Then Let A Mentally Disabled Man Be Executed To Distract Us (9/8/16) – “As we would soon learn, the Clintons were exceptionally gifted at defaming and demonizing their accusers (although if that didn’t work they could always pay them off). The problem in this case was that Flowers had made tapes of telephone conversations where Bill Clinton discussed how to cover up the affair.”
  • Veterans back fight by relative of drone victims: People should know ‘how a screw-up can lead to the death of their family members’ (9/8/16) – The title sums it up.
  • The Kremlin Really Believes That Hillary Wants to Start a War With Russia (9/7/16) – “The nation Clinton described was unrecognizable to its citizens. Anti-woman? Putin’s government provides working mothers with three years of subsidized family leave. Intolerant? The president personally attended the opening of Moscow’s great mosque. Racist? Putin often touts Russia’s ethnic diversity. To Russians, it appeared that Clinton was straining to fabricate a rationale for hostilities.”
  • How to Destroy Democracy: A Key to the U.S. Electoral College (9/2/16) – “So — let’s start with the most basic facts. First of all, the US presidential elections are not decided by how many people cast votes for a candidate — the winner of the election is decided based on how many “electors” a candidate gets. There are 538 electors (at the moment) & the number of electors each state gets is equal to the number of members it has in congress — oh, and DC gets to have as many electors as the least-populous state, which is 3.”
  • Obama Expands the ISIS Bombing Campaign to a 4th Country, the Media Barely Notice (8/5/16) – “Obama’s mission creep, without public debate or congressional sanction, goes on without examination of what it may entail for future presidents, let alone the present one. This is the new normal, and it’s a new normal the press codifies every time it treats Obama’s ever-expanding war as dull and barely newsworthy.”
  • The Biggest Lie: Clinton, Comey & Intent as it Pertains to the Espionage Act (7/13/16) – “Just over a month ago, I wrote about the Clinton Email Server Scandal, the extremely difficult choices facing various members of the government involved in the case and how I thought the whole thing might play out over time. At that time, I ruefully noted that I half expected the Democratic Party to completely ignore the potential legal dangers of nominating Hillary Clinton and quite literally drive the party off the edge of a cliff towards doom and destruction. As it turns out, I was being too kind – on Tuesday, July 5th, FBI Director James Comey functionally rewrote one of the most fundamental aspects of our legal system (determining mens rea) to justify his recommendation not to indict Hillary Clinton for her use of an unauthorized, insecure, private email server for all of her work at the State Department.”
  • Libya: From Africa’s Wealthiest Democracy under Gaddafi, to US-NATO Sponsored Terrorist Haven (10/9/15) – “Far from control being in the hands of one man, Libya was highly decentralized and divided into several small communities that were essentially “mini-autonomous States” within a State. These autonomous States had control over their districts and could make a range of decisions including how to allocate oil revenue and budgetary funds. Within these mini autonomous States, the three main bodies of Libya’s democracy were Local Committees, Basic People’s Congresses and Executive Revolutionary Councils.”

  • Clinton charities ignore law requiring them to disclose millions from foreign donors (9/6/16) – “A Scripps Washington Bureau review of tax returns and regulatory filings found that year after year the Clinton charities have ignored New York law and related instructions. However, the office of Attorney General Schneiderman, a Democrat whom Hillary Clinton named to her campaign’s “leadership council” in New York, did not respond to Scripps’ questions about the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), which has never publicly disclosed in New York filings the identity of its foreign government contributors or the amounts they give each year. Scripps also discovered CHAI did not report hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign government donations to the state.”
  • The Perils and Limits of ‘No-Fly Zones’ (9/6/16) – “The phrase “no-fly zone” has become a common one in debates over how the U.S. should respond to foreign conflicts, because it allows its advocates to obscure what it is they’re calling for (i.e., initiating significant hostilities against another state) and it creates the impression that the U.S. can “do something” about a conflict overseas at low cost with relatively few risks.”
  • Even Worse Than Clinton’s Emails (9/5/16) – “The civil service was missing in action. We learned about the emails from a hacker.”
  • Hillary Clinton, rarely seen, rarely heard (9/3/16) – “The Democrat lets reporters trail her but tucks them away to keep them out of sight and herself out of reach.”
  • The FBI’s Clinton File (9/2/16) – “Vanishing digital devices, memory lapses and withheld emails”
  • Hillary Clinton, the Podesta Group and the Saudi Regime: A Fatal Ménage à Trois (9/1/16) – “The Podesta Group’s March 2016 filing, required under the Foreign Agents Registration Act of 1938, shows that Tony Podesta himself oversees the Saudi account. At the same time, Tony Podesta is also a top campaign contributor and bundler for Hillary Clinton. So while one brother runs the campaign, the other brother funds it with earnings that come, in part, from the Saudis.”
  • As reckless as George W. Bush: Hillary Clinton helped create disorder in Iraq, Libya, Syria — and, scarier, doesn’t seem to understand how (3/13/16) – “This is a dangerous figure, and I use the word advisedly, not rhetorically. Over eight years as First Lady, eight more as a New York senator and four as secretary of state, Clinton has proven repeatedly abusive of social order and careless of human life. It is time we face these facts and act accordingly. This holds especially for those given to false consciousness or lesser-of-evils arguments as they decide what to do next November 8.”
  • Before Her Assassination, Berta Cáceres Singled Out Hillary Clinton for Backing Honduran Coup (3/11/16) – “Yeah, and she criticizes Hillary Clinton’s book, Hard Choices, where Clinton was holding up her actions in Honduras as an example of a clear-eyed pragmatism. I mean, that book is effectively a confession. Every other country in the world or in Latin America was demanding the restitution of democracy and the return of Manuel Zelaya. It was Clinton who basically relegated that to a secondary concern and insisted on elections, which had the effect of legitimizing and routinizing the coup regime and creating the nightmare scenario that exists today.”
  • Hillary Clinton’s Six Foreign-Policy Disasters (2/21/16) – Honduras, Haiti, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, and Ukraine

Posted 9/4/16:

  • Hillary Clinton told the FBI she couldn’t recall something more than three dozen times (9/3/16) – The title sums it up. It’s not little stuff she can’t quite recall, either.
  • Where Has Hillary Clinton Been? Ask the Ultrarich (9/3/16) – “And while Mrs. Clinton has faced criticism for her failure to hold a news conference for months, she has fielded hundreds of questions from the ultrarich in places like the Hamptons, Martha’s Vineyard, Beverly Hills and Silicon Valley.”
    • Note, this article is full of gems, like how kids could ask Clinton questions at $2,700 a pop. Apparently journalists just need to pay up if they want the privilege of a press conference!
  • Judge orders State to review, turn over Abedin-related documents (8/29/16) – “U.S. District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan ruled that the State Department has until Sept. 30 to complete its own review of documents that the department received from the FBI. The State Department then has another two weeks, until Oct. 14, to hand over all ‘non-exempt’ documents[.]”
  • The New York Times, bias, and Hillary Clinton (2/1/16) – “It is precisely because news organizations like The New York Times are mostly reliable news sources that their lapses into unreliable coverage are so jarring. Late last month, Times columnist Frank Bruni included his own paper among those that over-rely on unreliable polls and traffic in ‘horse race’ journalism. And Times public editor Margaret Sullivan has concluded that the paper has ‘played down’ Sanders’s candidacy and found coverage of his campaign to be ‘dismissive, even mocking.’ Astonishingly, she reported that the Times, which put reporter Amy Chozick on the Clinton beat back in the summer of 2013, only recently assigned a full-time reporter to Sanders.”
  • Jimmy Carter Defends Edward Snowden, Says NSA Spying Has Compromised Nation’s Democracy (7/18/13) – “Speaking at a closed-door event in Atlanta covered by German newspaper Der Spiegel, Carter also criticized the NSA’s domestic spying as damaging to the core of the nation’s principles.”

  • Democrats and Their Chilling Apathy Toward War (9/1/16) – “And it doesn’t end there. From Syria to Honduras, it’s fair to say that Hillary Clinton has been remarkably consistent in pushing for increased military interventionism throughout her political career. She has even been critical of the Obama administration for being too reluctant to utilize military aggression, despite the fact that Obama (who consistently spoke out against the Iraq invasion) has bombed seven countries, dropping 23,144 bombs on them in 2015 alone.”
  • Judicial Watch: New Abedin Emails Reveal Top Clinton Foundation Executive Doug Band Sought Diplomatic Passport from Clinton State Department (9/1/16) – “The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations strictly limits the granting of diplomatic passports to members of the Foreign Service, their family members, or those working on U.S. government contracts.”
  • Emails: Huma Abedin Intervened To Help Clinton Foundation Donor With Dispute Over Multimillionaire’s Will (9/1/16) – “Abedin moved to help Band fulfill Ruddy’s request, noting that the staffers who would normally handle such matters were out on vacation but that she would have a “junior”-level official help out.”
  • Clinton emailed classified info after leaving State: report (8/31/16) – “The email, which was sent months after she left the State Department, went to people including Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, diplomat Jeffrey Feltman, policy aide Jake Sullivan, diplomat Kurt Campbell, State Department chief of staff Cheryl Mills and top aide Huma Abedin.”
    • Note, she’s much more adept at protecting the content of her Wall Street speeches. (You might recall how it’s best “to keep the people ignorant,” about her Wall Street relationships and presumably, well, everything else.)
  • Corporate Democrats Have Always Hated the Left – Now They’re Shocked to Learn We Hate Them Back (7/28/16) – “Looking to chart a new course — a ‘third way’ — for liberals who were apathetic or even hostile toward organized labor and friendly toward organized wealth, the Democratic Leadership Council emerged as a powerful voice within the party’s establishment, touting the benefits of ‘private-sector economic growth’ and attempting to counter the perception that Democrats are the party of unions and ‘big government.'”
  • The Clinton Legacy Is Black Impoverishment-so Why Are We Still Voting for Hillary? (2/10/16) – This is a succinct summation for anyone who is, like me, only able to read The New Jim Crow two pages at a time because what it reveals is so horrifying.
  • This Is What a Tor Supporter Looks Like (12/26/15) – “Secrets can be necessary from foreign enemies, but we rarely need secrecy for more than a few years. And yet the vast amount of the billions and billions of pages of classified secret documents are…decades old. The only reason for that is to protect officials: from accountability, from blame for criminal prosecution in some cases, but more often just from mistakes, from admitting error, bad predictions, deceptions of the public, disastrous policies. In other words, these documents remain classified to protect officials from the electorate, to subvert democracy essentially. And that has been the effect.”

  • Seven ways the Clinton Foundation failed to meet its transparency promises (8/27/16) – “[When Clinton was confirmed secretary of State, she] was under pressure from senators in both parties and even the White House to agree to be transparent given the potential for ethical concerns with the Clinton Foundation, which has accepted donations or entered into charitable partnerships with foreign and corporate interests.”
  • How Much Corruption Can Clinton Laugh Off? (8/26/16) – “As with many other issues facing Clinton and her candidacy, she has laughed off the private email server scandal while deflecting and lying when asked about it. She most recently blamed former Secretary of State Colin Powell for her private email server use, a claim which Powell quickly debunked.”
  • US won’t release Clinton’s schedule as secretary of state before election day (8/26/16) – “[Associated Press] reporting was based on official calendars covering Clinton’s entire term plus the more-detailed daily schedules covering roughly half her time as secretary of state. The Associated Press first asked for Clinton’s calendars in 2010 and again in 2013. It then sued the state department in federal court to obtain the detailed schedules, and the department so far has provided about half of them under court order.”
  • The Death Toll in Yemen Is So High the Red Cross Has Started Donating Morgues to Hospitals (8/25/16) – “ALMOST A YEAR and a half into Saudi Arabia’s U.S.-backed bombing campaign in Yemen, the humanitarian toll has become so extensive that the International Committee of the Red Cross has taken the unusual step of donating entire morgue units to Yemeni hospitals.”
    • Note, if you haven’t been following this news, this 2015 article requesting embargo of arms (by the U.S. et al) to Saudi Arabia by Human Rights Watch gives a clear, succinct timeline of what’s happened
  • Clinton surrogate spins Clinton Foundation defense (8/24/16) – “Experts told us emails between Clinton aides and a foundation aide may not have been prohibited by the specific terms of the ethics pledges. But they demonstrate a blurring of the lines between official government business and Clinton’s personal connections — breaking the firewall Clinton agreed to preserve.” [moved from OSN section]

  • The U.S. Department of Clinton (8/25/16) – “In March this column argued that while Mrs. Clinton’s mishandling of classified information was important, it missed the bigger point. The Democratic nominee obviously didn’t set up her server with the express purpose of exposing national secrets—that was incidental. She set up the server to keep secret the details of the Clintons’ private life—a life built around an elaborate and sweeping money-raising and self-promoting entity known as the Clinton Foundation.”
    • Note, this WSJ column nails it. In my inspired-by-news story “Trust Me,” I tried to highlight that one doesn’t fall and accidentally land on a private server. It’s something one seeks out with very particular aims. It’s a purposeful maneuver to circumvent transparency, which is a pretty good indication that which is hidden isn’t in the public‘s interest.
  • Gowdy: Clinton used special tool to wipe email server (8/25/16) – “Hillary Clinton’s lawyers used a special tool to delete emails from her personal server so that “even God can’t read them,” House Select Committee on Benghazi Chairman Trey Gowdy said on Thursday.”
  • When Hillary threw Arab and Muslim Americans under the bus (2/26/16) – “Without hesitation, Clinton condemned her Muslim supporters, returned their donations and refused to meet with Arab and Muslim Americans for the remainder of her campaign, all in the spirit of ‘wooing Jewish voters,’ as The New York Times put it.”

  • What does Hillary have to do for it to be ‘corruption’? (8/24/16) – “In 2011, the United States all but encouraged rank-and-file Arabs across wide swaths of the Middle East to rise up against their despotic rulers in the so-called “Arab Spring.” But any support collapsed when it came to the democracy-(and-woman)-hating tyrants of the Persian Gulf, who provide America with oil and with prime real estate for our military bases. The worse case is Bahrain, whose autocratic monarches have crushed a pro-democracy movement with tear gas and armored personnel carriers bought with an assist from Clinton’s U.S. State Department.”
  • Hillary Clinton’s run-out-the-clock strategy (8/24/16) – “Plus, the campaign thinks Clinton’s commanding lead over Donald Trump in both national and battleground state polls gives her freedom to not comment — indeed, largely ignore — the disclosure this week that the FBI found nearly 15,000 new emails Clinton did not voluntarily hand over to the State Department last year.”
  • Confirmed: Army Training Slide Calling Hillary an Insider Threat Is Real (8/23/16) – “An Army spokesman has confirmed that a training slide that lists Hillary Clinton as an “insider threat” is real.”
  • Democrats are redbaiting like it’s 1956 (7/27/16) – “By inflating Russia’s evils to absurd extremes, and then accusing others of enabling them, one directly recreates the Cold War means of silencing dissent. By treating Russia as an all-purpose bogeyman, even when the U.S. routinely engages in similar behavior, one replicates an atmosphere that allows all criticism of the U.S. to be treated as traitorous.” [moved from OSN section]
  • Democracy in Peril: Twenty Years of Media Consolidation under the Telecommunications Act (2/11/16) – “Twenty years later the devastating impact of the legislation is undeniable: About 90 percent of the country’s major media companies are owned by six corporations. Bill Clinton’s legacy in empowering the consolidation of corporate media is right up there with the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and welfare reform, as being among the most tragic and destructive policies of his administration.”

  • Colin Powell Says Hillary Clinton’s ‘People Have Been Trying to Pin’ Email Scandal on Him (8/21/16) – The title sums it up.
  • Hillary Clinton and the Suicide of Liberalism (6/27/16) – “Which takes us back to Hillary, who has promised us that Bill will be “in charge of revitalizing the economy, because, you know, he knows how to do it.”  This might be reassuring for those in the top 10% who did quite well during Clinton’s presidency, but it shouldn’t be reassuring at all to the rest of the population.”
  • Be nice to Hillary Clinton online — or risk a confrontation with her super PAC (5/9/16) – “Hillary Clinton’s well-heeled backers have opened a new frontier in digital campaigning, one that seems to have been inspired by some of the Internet’s worst instincts. Correct the Record, a super PAC coordinating with Clinton’s campaign, is spending some $1 million to find and confront  social media users who post unflattering messages about the Democratic front-runner.”
  • In 2016, let’s hope for better trade agreements – and the death of TPP (1/10/16) – “The US concluded secret negotiations on what may turn out to be the worst trade agreement in decades, the so-called Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and now faces an uphill battle for ratification, as all the leading Democratic presidential candidates and many of the Republicans have weighed in against it. The problem is not so much with the agreement’s trade provisions, but with the “investment” chapter, which severely constrains environmental, health, and safety regulation, and even financial regulations with significant macroeconomic impacts.”
  • Firms Paid Bill Clinton as They Lobbied Hillary Clinton (4/28/15) – “Many of the companies that paid Bill Clinton for these speeches — a roster of global giants that includes Microsoft, Oracle and Dell — engaged him within the same three-month period in which they were also lobbying the State Department in pursuit of their policy aims, federal disclosure documents show. Several companies received millions of dollars in State Department contracts while Hillary Clinton led the institution.”

  • DNC fundraising surged in July despite turmoil (8/20/16) – “The DNC raised $32.4 million in July, topping its combined total from the previous three months, according to its filing Saturday with the Federal Election Commission. The Republican National Committee raised $27.2 million in July, and four years ago the DNC raised just under $10 million.”
    • Note, based on extensive reading the last several months, it might be more accurate to say “because of turmoil.” In Clinton, political and financial elites have a clearer–well blazed, comfortable–trail to protecting their interests than with Trump. These elites will contribute whatever they perceive they must to ensure a Clinton victory; if that means contributing more to offset increasing legal costs, they’re ready and willing to make that small concession for longer term protection. This @Honest_Hillary tweet sums it up perfectly: “The world’s elite laughed off that  ‘scandal’ & dug deep for the one candidate they knew was on their side” (If I sound cynical to you, please peruse other readings listed on this page for insight into why.)
  • Hillary hasn’t held a press conference in 257 days. That’s ridiculous. (8/18/16) – The title sums it up.
  • NPR Host Demands That Assange Do Something Its Own Reporters Are Told Never to Do (8/17/16) – “IN A TEN-MINUTE interview aired Wednesday morning, NPR’s David Greene asked Wikileaks founder Julian Assange five times to reveal the sources of the leaked information he has published on the internet.”
  • Abedin’s Overlapping Jobs Renew Focus on Clinton Conflicts (8/15/16) – “Huma Abedin stepped down from her post as deputy chief of staff at the State Department and Hillary Clinton’s ever-present personal assistant on June 3, 2012. Only she didn’t really leave.” The article goes on to note that she became a “special government employee” who also “took paying jobs with the Clinton Foundation.”
  • The Unlearned Lessons of Watergate (8/7/16) – “Squirreled away in the messages are kernels of insight into how some Washington politicians and their staff continue to court the donor class. For instance, the DNC promoted the opportunity to sit across from President Obama in exchange for five-figure donations to try and meet their $64 million goal for their Philadelphia convention.”
  • AP-NORC Poll: Americans Want Nomination System Changed (5/31/16) – “Many Americans are not happy with the way presidential candidates are chosen and have little faith in the fairness of either the Democratic or Republican system, according to a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.”

  • The NSA Leak Is Real, Snowden Documents Confirm (8/19/16) – “ON MONDAY, A HACKING group calling itself the ‘ShadowBrokers’ announced an auction for what it claimed were ‘cyber weapons’ made by the NSA. Based on never-before-published documents provided by the whistleblower Edward Snowden, The Intercept can confirm that the arsenal contains authentic NSA software, part of a powerful constellation of tools used to covertly infect computers worldwide.”
  • Donald Trump Proposes Banning Immigrants Based on Ideology, But Bush and Obama Got There First (8/17/16) – “The Obama administration has also blocked people of certain viewpoints from entering the United States. In 2011, the State Department denied a visa for Kermin Yeldiz, a prominent Kurdish rights activist who lives in Britain and was traveling to the United States to accept an award. After the ACLU and PEN sent a joint letter of protest, the State Department issued Yeldiz a visa.”
  • State Department to release all of Clinton’s deleted emails (8/16/16) – “The State Department will release all of the work-related emails that the FBI recovered from Hillary Clinton’s private system, the department confirmed in a recent court filing, eliminating the possibility that the messages will remain secret.”
    • Note, Clinton turned over her private server including “roughly 30,000 emails” only after deleting thousands of others she characterized as personal. That characterization notwithstanding, the FBI recovered several thousand work-related emails that had also been deleted. It’s these emails that will eventually be released.
  • How Hillary Clinton Became A Hawk (4/24/16) – “Bruce Riedel, a former intelligence analyst who conducted Obama’s initial review on the Afghanistan war, says: ‘I think one of the surprises for Gates and the military was, here they come in expecting a very left-of-center administration, and they discover that they have a secretary of state who’s a little bit right of them on these issues — a little more eager than they are, to a certain extent. Particularly on Afghanistan, where I think Gates knew more had to be done, knew more troops needed to be sent in, but had a lot of doubts about whether it would work.'”
  • Bill Clinton’s foundation cashed in as Sweden lobbied Hillary on sanctions (6/2/15) – “As the money flowed to the foundation from Sweden, Mrs. Clinton’s team in Washington declined to blacklist any Swedish firms despite warnings from career officials at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm that Sweden was growing its economic ties with Iran and potentially undercutting Western efforts to end Tehran’s rogue nuclear program, diplomatic cables show.”
  • Taxpayer Tab for Clinton Inc.: $16 million (3/12/15) – “Of the $16 million requested under the former presidents fund, nearly $3 million has been slated for staff salary and benefits, according to GSA budgeting documents.”
  • America is an oligarchy, not a democracy or republic, university study finds (4/21/14) – “One finding in the study: The U.S. government now represents the rich and powerful, not the average citizen, United Press International reported.”
  • The Untold Story Of How Clinton’s Budget Destroyed The American Economy (9/5/12) – “However, in the New York Post, Charlie Gasparino uses the occasion to remind everyone that the seeds of our current economic malaise were planted during the Clinton years.”

  • TV Networks Should Open Up the Presidential Debates (8/15/16) – “The [Commission on Presidential Debates] grew out of a deal cut in the 1980s by GOP and Democratic leaders. Today, even though the US public largely distrusts the presidential candidates of the two major parties, TV networks seem willing to allow them to again dictate the terms of debate, including who gets to participate.”
  • Emails Renew Questions About Clinton Foundation and State Department Overlap (8/9/16) – “A new batch of State Department emails released Tuesday showed the close and sometimes overlapping interests between the Clinton Foundation and the State Department when Hillary Clinton served as secretary of state.”
  • How Clinton Donor Got on Sensitive Intelligence Board (6/10/16) – “Newly released State Department emails help reveal how a major Clinton Foundation donor was placed on a sensitive government intelligence advisory board even though he had no obvious experience in the field, a decision that appeared to baffle the department’s professional staff.”
  • The Rise of Trump Shows the Danger and Sham of Compelled Journalistic “Neutrality” (3/14/16) – “This abdication of the journalistic duty inevitably engendered by corporate “neutrality” rules is not new. We saw it repeatedly during the Bush years, when most large media outlets suppressed journalistic criticism of things like torture and grotesque war crimes carried out by the U.S. as part of the war on terror, and even changed their language by adopting government euphemisms to obscure what was being done.”
  • Clinton Foundation Donors Got Weapons Deals From Hillary Clinton’s State Department (5/25/15) – “The Clinton-led State Department also authorized $151 billion of separate Pentagon-brokered deals for 16 of the countries that donated to the Clinton Foundation, resulting in a 143 percent increase in completed sales to those nations over the same time frame during the Bush administration. These extra sales were part of a broad increase in American military exports that accompanied Obama’s arrival in the White House. The 143 percent increase in U.S. arms sales to Clinton Foundation donors compares to an 80 percent increase in such sales to all countries over the same time period.”

  • Obama, Clinton, and a never-ending state of war: the never-ending bloodshed that no one wants to talk about (8/1/16) – “We just don’t get how our accidentally  killing civilians with drones might radicalize  the surviving family and tribe.”
  • War and Wall Street: Clinton’s Bleak Record (8/1/16) – “Clinton’s pick for Vice President is Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, whose campaign donors include the oil, gas and coal industries, the Israeli lobby, the finance and technology industries, defense contractors, agribusiness and more. He has thus been a champion of free-trade (TPP), bank deregulation, education reform (via EdTech), offshore drilling, hawkish foreign policies and union-busting.”
  • Why Can’t Hillary Clinton Stop Lying? (8/1/16) – “Her dishonesty could push an unknown number of independent and undecided voters into Trump’s camp or toward a non-major-party candidate. If too many swing voters walk away from Clinton because she destroyed her credibility or because they don’t want to condone her behavior, the nuclear codes go to Trump.”
  • An open letter to Hillary from a Bernie delegate (8/1/16) – “If there’s an effective tactical alliance to be had, you’re screwing it up. Maybe the old triangulating reflex is just too deep-seated a habit to break. Maybe you want to pound home to Bernie folks that you’re the undisputed boss. Maybe you just can’t help yourself.”
  • California Calls Fraud: Demands DNC Investigation (7/14/16) – “A grassroots organization, Watch The Vote, is collecting complaints to show a civil grand jury the various ways voters were disenfranchised during the California primary. According to Kelly Mordecai, director of Watch the Vote, a civil grand jury provides an expedited way for citizens to have their voices heard—easier, in many ways, than filing a lawsuit. Watch The Vote’s hope isn’t to overturn the primary results, but rather to prevent tampering and ensure a uniform, fair and reliable voting process for all voters—regardless of the political party with which they’re identified.”
  • Democrats Will Learn All the Wrong Lessons from Brush with Bernie (6/9/16) – “Politicians are so used to viewing the electorate as a giant thing to be manipulated that no matter what happens at the ballot, they usually can only focus on the Washington-based characters they perceive to be pulling the strings. Through this lens, the uprising among Democratic voters this year wasn’t an organic expression of mass disgust, but wholly the fault of Bernie Sanders, who within the Beltway is viewed as an oddball amateur and radical who jumped the line.”
  • Clinton fundraising leaves little for state parties (5/2/16) – “The Democratic front-runner says she’s raising big checks to help state committees, but they’ve gotten to keep only 1 percent of the $60 million raised.”

  • How to Hack an Election in 7 Minutes (8/5/16) – This article explores the extraordinary number of ways U.S. elections are hackable. See also: “DHS explores new protections for electoral process
    • Note, while the election-hacking article repeatedly implicates Russia in recent DNC hacks, both Google and Bing searches this morning continue to reflect only that “signs point to Russia.” There is very little explanation as to what “these signs” are, but this article is certainly a sign of how fluidly reporting and propaganda now flow together in modern U.S. media. Please read this and all articles with a critical eye toward what unproven assertions are masqueraded as fact!
  • Hillary Clinton holds a halfway press conference (8/5/16) – “Hillary Clinton sort of, kind of, almost broke her streak and held a press conference on Friday.”
  • 2 in 3 young Americans say GOP and Dems don’t represent them (8/5/16) – “Across racial and ethnic groups just 28 percent of young adults said the two major parties do a good job of representing them, according to a new GenForward poll.”
  • Inequality destroys the middle class (8/4/16) – “In the real world, inequality is destroying the middle class. The following four issues, all part of the cancer of corporatocracy, have grown in intensity and destructiveness in just the last few years. They should be campaign issues, given more than just lip service from candidate Hillary Clinton, and given more than just passing reference in the news reports of the mainstream media.”

  • Hillary Clinton’s foolish Tim Kaine hedge: Democrats cannot defeat Trumpism with cautious conservatism (7/30/16) – “The senator is personally opposed to abortion, supports Virginia’s ‘Right-to-work’ law, has called himself a conservative in the past and, shortly before his selection, signed two letters ‘urging federal regulators to go easy on banks,’ as reported by Zach Carter in The Huffington Post.”
    • Note, I’m not totally sure the title conclusion is correct. The current strategy appears to be wooing moderate to left leaning Republicans to fill in vacancies left by progressives who #DemExit.
  • What Does the Democratic Party Stand for Now? Good Question. (7/29/16) – “The delegates I spoke to paused, backed up, rephrased. In each case, they settled on general virtues: justice, inclusion, progress, the idea that the party was not so much associated with a particular program but with goodness itself, with a progressive sensibility that will, on the whole, produce virtuous outcomes.”
  • After Lying Low, Deep-Pocketed Clinton Donors Return to the Fore (7/28/16) – “After a wrenching yearlong nominating battle with searing debates over the influence of Wall Street and the ability of ordinary citizens to be heard over the din of dollars changing hands, the party’s moneyed elite returned to the fore this week, undeterred and mostly unabashed.”
  • Hillary’s Choice: Why Tim Kaine Isn’t a ‘Safe’ Pick (7/27/16) – “Kaine’s real job is being the anti-progressive, corporately speaking. Rather than reflecting the “safe” pick that Hillary’s supporters argue he is, the selection reveals her desperate need for those last few months of campaign contributions to beat The Donald. She doesn’t need the $27 average-citizen contributions that were the cornerstone of Sanders’ fundraising machine. She needs Wall Street bucks, and can’t afford to tick off any big bank by running with someone vehemently opposed to their current composition.”
  • WikiLeaks List: Most Damaging Emails About DNC, Clinton, & Bernie (7/22/16) – “The emails show the DNC working against Bernie Sanders during the primary, with some startling tidbits such as how the DNC considered denying a Bernie delegate admittance to a fundraiser because she supported Bernie. The DNC was also only concerned about reduced polling locations in Rhode Island because it might give Sanders’ supporters more reasons to complain.”
  • How to Fight a Fascist and Win (6/6/16) – “But while defeating these forces at the polls is important, it is also insufficient. It does nothing to tackle the underlying causes for their popularity or address the grievances on which these parasites feed. Preventing them from gaining office is in no way commensurate with stemming their influence or power.”
  • Why Some of the Smartest Progressives I Know Will Vote for Trump over Hillary (6/1/16) – “By contrast, the Democratic Party in the Clinton and Obama administrations has consistently embraced and implemented policies that strip workers of economic and legal rights to benefit investors and the elite professionals that serve them. Over time, the “neoliberal” economic order—which sees only good, never bad, in the relentless untrammeling of capital and the deregulation of markets—has created an unacceptable level of economic insecurity and distress for those outside the 1 percent and the elite professionals who serve them.”
  • Hillary Clinton, Corporate America and the Democrats’ Dilemma (2/21/16) – “To understand the dynamics underlying the Clinton-Sanders nomination contest, it’s helpful to remember the old adage that Democrats are supposed to be the party of ordinary working people. As the nomination process plays out, the 2016 race might be remembered as the party’s last gasp at being true to that narrative.”
  • Don’t Be Fooled—Hillary Clinton Is No Progressive (2/11/16) – “The Clinton Administration did more for the banks and Wall Street than perhaps any presidential administration in the history of the United States. As part of the third way platform, the New Democrats and the Clintons had adopted Reagan’s economics. The 1990’s saw three major pieces of financial deregulation”
  • Why Hillary Clinton Doesn’t Deserve the Black Vote (2/10/16) – “Bill Clinton championed discriminatory laws against formerly incarcerated people that have kept millions of Americans locked in a cycle of poverty and desperation. The Clinton administration eliminated Pell grants for prisoners seeking higher education to prepare for their release, supported laws denying federal financial aid to students with drug convictions, and signed legislation imposing a lifetime ban on welfare and food stamps for anyone convicted of a felony drug offense—an exceptionally harsh provision given the racially biased drug war that was raging in inner cities.”
    • Note, Michelle Alexander authored the insightful and illuminating The New Jim Crow, which meticulously links the militarization of modern U.S. police forces to the highly race-based War on Drugs, enabling the flow of federal monies to state and local actors willing to serve as aggressive anti-“drug” actors.
  • Hillary Clinton’s Progressive Problem: The real policy differences between her and Bernie Sanders can actually be quantified (2/9/16) – “[W]hen it comes to judging who’s more progressive than who, political scientists have an app for that—at least for those who’ve served in Congress, as Sanders and Clinton both have. It’s the DW-Nominate first dimension, scaled from +1 to -1, which explains the lion’s share of how members vote. [Explanation|Data]. For the two years when they served in the Senate together, Sanders had a score of -.717, making him far and away the most liberal member. Number two, Sheldon Whitehouse had a score of -.507, while number 15, Hillary Clinton had a score of -.403.”
  • Richest 1% Now Wealthier Than the Rest of the World, Oxfam Says (1/17/16) – “The richest 1 percent is now wealthier than the rest of humanity combined, according to Oxfam, which called on governments to intensify efforts to reduce such inequality.”
  • Why Progressives Vote Against Their Interests When Choosing Hillary Over Bernie Sanders (12/30/15) – “However, Hillary Clinton did utilize a 3:00 a.m. ad with a “racist sub-message.”Regarding how the ad was utilized, Harvard’s Orlando Patterson stated “It is striking, too, that during the same weekend the ad was broadcast, Mrs. Clinton refused to state unambiguously that Mr. Obama is a Christian and has never been a Muslim.” Like Trump, Clinton utilized Islamophobia, only the watchdogs of such tactics never blow the whistle when the name “Clinton” is involved, or when Supreme Court justices are at stake.”
  • Hillary Clinton’s Mixed Record on Wall Street Belies Her Tough ‘Cut it Out’ Talk (11/13/15) – “In dealing with Wall Street, Clinton faced the same challenge as any lawmaker representing New York, where the financial industry includes not only constituents but campaign donors. Wall Street executives were the largest donors to both her 2006 Senate re-election bid and her 2008 presidential race; employees of just eight banking firms gave $2.67 million to those campaigns, according to data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, a non-profit research group.”
  • Hillary Clinton’s Take on Banks Won’t Hold Up (10/14/15) – “This squeamishness about criticizing banks is laughable to people in the industry. But of course, that’s probably the point – that the average voter won’t know how absurd and desperate it is to point to faceless “shadow” financiers as villains when the real bad guys are famed mega-firms that are right out in the open, with their names plastered all over every second city block.”
  • 45 times Secretary Clinton pushed the trade bill she now opposes (6/15/15) – “But as members of the Obama administration can attest, Clinton was one of the leading drivers of the TPP when Secretary of State.”
  • A Deep Dive Into Party Affiliation (4/7/15) – “The share of independents in the public, which long ago surpassed the percentages of either Democrats or Republicans, continues to increase. Based on 2014 data, 39% identify as independents, 32% as Democrats and 23% as Republicans. This is the highest percentage of independents in more than 75 years of public opinion polling.”
  • Five Reasons No Progressive Should Support Hillary Clinton (2/13/15) – “As early as July 2013, an MSNBC article referred to [Clinton] as the “presumptive nominee,” a term generally reserved for the Democratic candidate who has clinched the majority of party delegates.”
  • DNC Chair: Superdelegates Exist to Protect Party Leaders from Grassroots Competition (2/12/15) – “[Wasserman Schultz] added, ‘Unpledged delegates exist really to make sure that party leaders and elected officials don’t have to be in a position where they are running against grassroots activists.‘”
  • The Most Entitled Generation Isn’t Millennials. It’s Baby Boomers (1/8/15) – “These grave consequences were entirely foreseeable – but they happened. Young Americans have been fleeced in order to fund the transient excesses of the old – and yet Milliennials are labeled ‘entitled’ because we were given ‘participation trophies’ and ‘personal tutors’ before we were old enough to vote…?”
  • N.Y. cops union head doesn’t get it (12/22/14) – “Don’t get me wrong, I don’t view the police as the enemy. I simply don’t trust them like I once did. I no longer give them the benefit of the doubt, meaning I can now just as easily believe the suspect’s version of the facts as the police officers. And I can easily believe allegations of police misconduct.

8/5/16: I’ve recently begun reading extensively on U.S. politics, a subject that used to bore me to sleep. Now that I’ve come to find it interesting, I’ll update this page periodically with new articles and insights (versus spamming readers’ feeds with politically oriented posts).

You’ll likely note that my posts are heavily progressive oriented. I’ve had to search for such posts in a period during which it’s much easier to find non-progressive text masquerading as progressive than to find truly progressive articles. So if you’re asking yourself, “Wow, why does she seem so left-leaning?!” it’s because I am, indeed, further left than I realized before Bernie Sanders illuminated U.S. politics for me–and many others–during the 2016 U.S. election cycle.
