Home > Love, Movies > over my shoulder, smiling

over my shoulder, smiling

every night,
i fall asleep
listening to
the same
movie

in
everything must go,
a salesman has three
days (more or less)
to get rid of
everything
he owns

the premise
makes it sound sad,
but it ends up being
hopeful,
instead

a couple
of weeks ago,
i exclaimed to
my husband,
“oh! i just got
why i love
this movie
so much!”

“yeah?”

“because of
the boy who
becomes his
assistant, it
reminds me
of watching
my mom’s
garage
sales
all
those
years!

“it’s
like
home!”

“mm,”
replied
my husband,
smiling.
“you’re
just now
figuring
this out?!”

it
brings
me to my
mom another
way,
too

its
protagonist
is played by
will ferrell,
one of the leads
in one of my mom’s
favorite movies,
night at the
roxbury

(she watched it
so much, one sister
threw the tape away
to make. her. stop.)

i was
a background actor
an extra
on ferrell’s movie
old school,
parts of
which
were
being
filmed
on
my
campus

i
almost
physically
bumped into
will ferrell
one day

we talked
briefly
about
law school;

he seemed
pretty nice

when i told
my mom,
she was
over
the
moon

and so
when i
listen
to this
movie
about
losing
everything,
i can’t
help
but
smile
at the
sense
i’m
finding
it
with
my mom
not only
in my heart
but also
just
over
my
shoulder,

smiling

That was absolutely beautiful. Its been a while since i lost my mom…and there are certain experiences I go through where I’m sure she would be smiling as well. I’m going to watch that movie.

What a beautiful story to start my day. And now I need to watch that movie, too!
