i must read the stories

my husband
is black

wedding bw

my sons
are black

these boys

when
yet another
black person
is killed by police
in the united states–
killed by the united states–
when a citation would have done,
i do not have the luxury
of plugging my ears
and saying,

i am not
what i identify
as racist, therefor
there is no racism
in these great states

i
must
read
the
stories

i
must
read
those
terrifying
(abundant)
comments
about how
“those people”
deserve death;
how “those people”
must have
done something
to incite death;
how “those people”
aren’t really us

i
must
read
to know
(some of)
what my
husband knows;
what my sons
will someday know

i
must
read,
that i may
listen, that i may
hear, that i may know
how to show
that “those people”
will keep dying
as long as
they are
“those
people,”
not
“us”

This is the picture I will plaster everywhere. You will not find a mugshot.

I do not want one single parent to say goodbye unnecessarily.
