what song tomorrow

last september,
a friend asked me
if i was a lefty

she wondered …
because i’m
so creative

i was delighted,
but i wondered
what she
was
smoking

i was creative,
years ago, i
thought;
now,
mere
logistics
machine

i decided
to write
a musical

(i only just
discovered musicals,
but i used to
write songs,
though i don’t
read music or
play a single
instrument)

images
have danced
through my brain
since, but words
actually sprang
to mind as i
stepped into
the parking garage
after work
today

i “wrote” a song
by singing it
while i drove

when i pulled
into my driveway,
i smiled and thought,

maybe the song’s
not great; maybe i’ll
someday think of it
as the worst song
i ever wrote*

i mused
as i climbed
out of my car,
but you know what?
this song did
not exist
when i drove
to work this morning,

and exists now,
because i wrote it

a journey
begins with a single step
(or maybe even before);
a musical
begins with a single note
(or maybe even before);
and my heart,
well, it knows
this, even when
my brain is
all jumbled
with to-dos
and shoulda-dones,

and
a song
now exists
that wouldn’t
have, if i’d decided
before writing
that
i
couldn’t

now,
i can’t help
but wonder:

what song
will i write
tomorrow?

Like this one, from teenaged me

Drawn by teenaged me

* not likely,
’cause I
once …
wrote …
this

🙂 Thanks for the smile. ‘Kick You in the Junk’ reminds me of my clunker, ‘Organic Oatmeal’ written at thirteen. Your decision to write a musical reminds me of the one I wanted to write back in the hippier part of the seventies. Feels so good to remember stuff like that.

I learned in Japan that it’s impossible to be upset while making terrible music video imitations. It’s been more than a decade since my roommate and I filmed that, and it still makes me smile. It really does feel good to remember stuff like that.

Whatever it will be will be amazing because it will be a reflection of you. Record your songs, someone can transpose it for you.

Your comment reminds me that I saw there’s now software that can do it for you. Kinda exciting, that! For now, I’ll see what I can do about the words; if there’s anything left after that, I’ll try to suss out for what it seems like it’s left. 🙂

I can’t wait for you to share more! Kick you in the junk-awesome! Lolololol
Your musical will be @$$ kicking I’m sure!
(On a side note, I pictured you singing the same song in a smooth monotone voice whilst driving, as you that you are now. Still laughing. 💜)

LOL! Once in a while I do sing my old songs while driving. I posted one here in my blog’s very, very early days, but decided retaining it wasn’t worth paying the audio hosting fee. Now, I’d probably entice a sound editor friend to add some music before posting it. 😉

I’m about 2.75 songs in so far. It’s such a joy to try–and learn–something new! I feel it’ll be like with Li’l D’s blog, where he’ll be able to see over time how his writing changes. Yes, I’ll be better after lots of practice than I am at the beginning, but that goes to the merits of practice, not the potentially dubious choices at the beginning. Heh.

You should ask Li’l D for help with a song! Oh my gosh A DUET!!! That would be so fun. I do that with Birdie. She is all about Run DMC 😜
