opened by your love

Different, but united

oh,
my sweet boys,
so tiny and enormous
at two and six years of age,

i loved you
across the universe
from the moment
i knew you existed,
without
measure,
restraint,
or need
for return

i now love you
bigger than the universe
when i see the smallness
of your physical sizes
and marvel how little that
has to do with the scale
of your love

i will love you
wider than the universe
whether you build skyscrapers
or flip burgers, whether you
build orphanages or
marvelous
daydreams,
whether you
wear dresses
or combat boots
(or both), and
whether you love
women or men (or both),
but pray above all
that you
will know,
and show,
love
abundant

today, as
you laugh and
play games, and
shout at each other,
and run circles around me,
i think of florida men and women
killed for their love;
who will never again
breathe to shine
their love
in a world–
or is it nation?–
where it can be easier
to find and fire weapons
than love

i can’t breathe
imagining the moment
you understand
these things
are possible

what do i tell you,
when you ask
about these things,
today, or
tomorrow,
or next year,
or the year after that?

i wish i could tell you
the world is safe
and make it so
by wishing
hard enough,
but i cannot
in good conscience
tell this lie

so i think
i will tell you,
when the time comes,
not to be constrained
by your fears
but opened
by your
love

i will ask you
to go out and make
the world safer
by flinging
far and wide
your love,

knowing that
i will hold you safe
and firm within my heart
even when my arms can’t reach you

arms are short,
but

love is endless

flying flags

So very well stated–lucky boys, you have!

Thanks, Patti. I wish to everything good in this universe I could reach through time and space and … change what’s happened.

I hope I can through my small words and acts play a tiny part in some good yet to happen.

    Beautiful…

This was beautiful, thank you for sharing. My heart is heavy today.

This made my eyes water. I feel the exact same about my boys and I wish more people thought this way. Although, as a side note, I am a gun owner and while I don’t feel I should have to give up my right (it’s my safety), I do feel that guns are way too easy to get.

I was recently opposed to almost any restrictions on gun ownership, but got some compelling comments on an old “persuade me otherwise” post that compelled me to reconsider. I’m not sure where exactly I fall now, apart from that I desperately want intensive regulations on weapons that can be fired rapidly, and that this is desirable–for me–of government entities and individuals alike!

Aaaaand … thank you. May our well loved children go out in the world and spread more love. ♡♡♡

    So good! My favorite is:

    i will love you
    wider than the universe
    whether you build skyscrapers
    or flip burgers, whether you
    build orphanages or
    marvelous
    daydreams,
    whether you
    wear dresses
    or combat boots
    (or both), and
    whether you love
    women or men (or both),
    but pray above all
    that you
    will know,
    and show,
    love
    abundant

That is the feeling, isn’t it? I know that feeling.
