Home was in the car

My younger sister
drove us past Mom’s house

(Mom hasn’t lived there
since she died
in my sisters’ arms
five years ago)

I anticipated
a sense of heaviness,
as I have felt each time
I’ve passed since
it was empty of her

This time,
I smiled

The mess in the yard
wasn’t Mom’s mess
but it felt a little
like home
all the same

And I understood
a greater truth, as we stared houseward
in wait of a green light:
home is not in walls,
or addresses,
or fences

Home was in my youngest sister’s party,
where Mom’s seven-so-far grandkids
shrieked over shared pizza,
the same kind Mom used to buy us;
in the playground where all seven kids ran free;

Home was in the car with me

    Home was in the car with you, and anchored in your heart.

    It looks like this is fast becoming the perfect trip ‘home’ 🙂

      Sunday ended up being a little more challenging, but … it was the kind of challenging I know we’ll all laugh about in a few years! (Heck, even a few months!) 🙂

    Everything I was going to say has already been said. I’m happy for you. 💜

      Thank you. ♥ By the time we arrived back home today, it felt like we couldn’t possibly have left … but the feeling of those three days said very much otherwise. ♥

      My Li’l D believes himself an Oregonian. And why not? His love of the place further blends my past and present. ♥

      I wanted to post a gabillion pictures, but stopped myself at two! I’m still trying to think what framework might allow me to post a couple others. 😀
