Indie publishing interview, books & such
The Saturday before last, I posted a vlog mentioning I’d done an interview on my experiences with indie publishing. That interview is now posted here. At 12 minutes, it’s not as short as the other couple of vlogs I’ve posted here, but it is good background listening as you go about your blogging business today.
Speaking of indie publishing, Memos from Your Closet Monster (previously touched on in this blog) went live on Amazon yesterday afternoon. I’m still entranced by Mack’s gorgeous cover. More than being entranced by it, I’m soothed by it. Its center photo was taken on my mom’s porch during a period of mental illness induced estrangement, so that the empty chair behind me felt like so much more than an empty chair. Seeing that photo worked into something physically beautiful transformed the picture for me. At its taking, it was a sorrowful photo from a sorrowful time; now it’s been reshaped into one small piece of something bigger and much more complex than any single word could possibly encompass.
My morning writing time is rapidly dwindling, so I’d best wrap this up–after a quick note on my recent reading! I tend to rate most books I actually finish at four stars, but the last two I read and the one I’m reading now all get five stars. Which books, exactly? More on that here.
What are you reading today?

I look forward to opening my Kindle and reading more of your words… just ordered “Memos…”!!
Thank you, Carol! ♥ Many of the words have appeared here in at some point, but they read so differently in this format with this formation and these introductions!
Oh! Must order today! This looks fantastic Deb! Congrats on the new book.
Thanks, Valerie! This collects some of my best blogs, giving them introductions and new order. I’m hoping that when the book is free this Friday through Sunday, I’ll find a new audience for some of my favorite essays.
It’s amazing how different it is to see them on my blog versus in a beautifully formatted book. The words are mine regardless, but seeing them in book–especially having given each of them a little more context–is a pretty amazing thing.
Aaand it occurs to me I need to locate my copy of Gift of Fate! (I’m failing deeply in my efforts to put items in their proper spots so that I can actually find them later. Ahem.)
Can’t wait to watch the interview later today! That cover picture really is powerful, and I’m glad it has turned into something new for you as a result.
Well, besides YOUR book (tee hee!), Babs just dropped off the Shades ot Gray trilogy this weekend because I wanted to…um…review it…for my…blog (actually, that really is true, ha!), and I also ordered “Something Borrowed” and a book of writer’s essays on how they decided to have or not have kids. I’m seriously thinking of taking two weeks off in August (which I haven’t done since I got married four years ago!), so hope to have more book-readin’ time soon!
I’m not sure I’ll read Shades of Gray itself, but I will absolutely be reading and looking forward to your review! In the meantime, I’m chuckling at how you presented it here. Heh.
Yeah for two weeks off in August! If you’re looking for a few more reads as those days near, I’d highly recommend A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and/or If I Stay by Gayle Forman. They’re both sad, uplifting and just goosebump-inspiringly beautiful! Not great summer reading, perhaps, but I really do get goosebumps just thinking about these books months after having read them.
I’m in the middle of A Feast For Crows, the 4th Game of Thrones book, also known as “the boring one.”
Ha! I love your characterization of that. I read the first two books in college. My copy of the third book was so grossly mishandled by a roommate that I decided I would be better off just giving it away. Never got around to getting another copy . . .
The third one is excellent. Plus, if you read it now you can ruin the next season of the TV show for people.
Hey, Deb! I just finished reading “Into the Wild”, and now I’m actually starting to read a classic: “Little Women”! Maycee picked it up as a freebie from her school library when we went to the book fair-she has high aspirations for her little 8-year-old self, and I love it. So, I’m “previewing” it for her until she can handle the small print, hee, hee. I’m also still working on finishing your book…but since I read at night and get spooked easily, the vampire stuff has to be in small doses! Wish I had a Kindle so I could read your memos! I, too, just loooove the cover photo.
I hear you about the night reading! I found a fabulous horror book that I’d love to read through to conclusion, but most my reading time is at night . . . and it’s actually scary. I’ve downloaded a non-fiction book for my just-before-bed reading. (I would’ve gone with one of my library books, but my random picks weren’t great this time around!)
Heya Deb! I LOVE the cover! It looks super professional. Mack did an amazing job!! Is it on Nook? (I’m gonna check.) I’m having ankle surgery tomorrow and need something new to read. I just finished reading “How to Have an Elegant Wedding for Under $5000.” I’m helping K plan for next summer and I’m pretty sure that I can do a nice, small, elegant wedding on the cheap! I can’t wait to listen to your interview.
Mack’s gifted in many things visual! I try describing to her the vague, horrible sketches I have of things in my mind and totally fail. This is a good thing, because she ends up with stuff that looks much, much better. :p
The book won’t be on Nook for a couple of months, sadly. I hope you found something delightful to read. Even more than that, I hope tomorrow’s surgery goes great. &heart;
(I have total confidence in your faith to pull off that wedding, FWIW!)
Congratulations on the new book! The cover is gorgeous. Maybe I had a little ESP about you today. I’m glad it told me to come over and say hi so I could see the good news.
So many bloggers I know seem to be very busy about now with other things. I hope it’s good news and fun for most and not just the aggravations of life. May it be so for you and your family. <3
Thanks, Re! I’m glad you came over and said hi. I’ve been feeling crushed by all the projects I have going, but the weight is lifting bit by bit as I see that not everything has to get done now. I hope any busyness your’e experience is also good and fun. ♥
